Raw Food Diet: What’s all the hype?

Recently we have had several clients approach us about the new fad of raw food pet diets. Although the idea of a raw diet sounds intriguing, we have several reasons why we do not recommend feeding raw proteins to your pets.

The American Veterinary Medical Association strongly discourages the feeding of any animal-source protein that has not been thoroughly cooked to your pets.  Without taking the proper steps to eliminate pathogens you are running the risk of exposing your cat or dog to illness. Several studies report that raw or undercooked animal-source protein may be contimated with a variety of organisms, including salmonella.

Cats and dogs may develop food borne illnesses after being fed raw protein that is contimated, and it has also been reported that these illnesses can be transmitted to humans. Your pets can develop what are called subclinical infections with these organisms – and pose a risk to humans, especially children, older persons, and immunocomprimised individuals.

To avoid risks associated with these diets the AVMA recommends the following:

  • Restrict dog and cats access to animal carcasses
  • Never feed inadequately treated animal-source protein
  • Provide fresh, clean, nutritionally balanced and commercially prepared or home-cooked food to cats and dogs, and dispose of uneaten food at least daily

And as always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

Amazing Animal Stories!!

This is a picture of a 12 month old puppy that was brought in for coughing/choking, who had swallowed an 8 inch kitchen knife!! This did not occur at our clinic, but we wanted to share for a couple of reasons – for starters, it is pretty incredible that a puppy can swallow a knife and survive a surgery to remove it!! Secondly, it is sometimes seemingly small symptoms that can actually lead to huge problems!!

Let’s use this as a reminder to listen to the subtle hints our pets are giving us, and keep an eye on those rascally pups!!
